Nelete was walking through the desert, pausing occasionally to brush some sand aside. She was looking for the reclusive animals of the desert. It wasn’t the best idea to come out in the middle of the day, but she’d left the forests early in the morning. Sighing, she shifted into a goshawk and rode a thermal up. She didn’t think she’d spot anything from in the sky, but she did spot an oasis ahead.
The oasis became Nelete’s destination and she was more than relieved. She landed heavily on the grass and lay on her back. A small rodent crept out of the fronds and climbed onto her stomach. Nel looked at it and smiled. Other small animals came out to her, but not the elusive reptiles she’d hoped for. But Nelete contented herself with mammals and birds that came to see her, listening and talking to each of them.

A few meters away, on the outskirts of the oasis, was a man, hidden under a tan blanket. He laid on his stomach, sweat pouring down his body and onto the sand. He remained still to keep cool, opting to go out when night fell for some water. For now, he rested, his brown hair clinging to his face and his chin rested on his crossed arms. He lost the tracks of his horse long again, there may no longer be hope for Daae.

The oasis had it's own small family herd of horses. As the sun began to set, the mammals began to leave Nel and some of the reptiles ventured out to her. The snakes slithered over her and draped themselves over her hot skin. One horse came up to her and lipped her hair. Nel looked up into big brown eyes.
"Hi. You're a pretty one." The horse lowered it's head and whickered softly. Nel smiled and it lay down by her head.

There was one horse stading by the herd that bore the mark of a human, a saddle on it's back and a brand on it's hip. It was a dark bay with long hair and a long tail, fur growing over it's hooves. It grazed with a free mouth; it freed itself from it's bridle.

The horse by Nel whinnied and the herd moved around them. This one was the stallion. A mare came over and sniffed Nel and the snakes on her. She giggled but the snakes weren't happy. The mare snorted and moved on, young foal following in her wake.

The horse looked up from it's meal. He rolled his eyes and turned to the side, greedily eating. A snake slithered by the the horse bit at it, snorting as it shrieked and slithered away.

Nel sat up, spilling snakes from her body. The stallion looked up, but then went back to snoozing. He wasn't interested. Nel got up and crossed to the horse. She held her hands out to him, approaching more slowly as she stepped closer.

The horse was preoccupied, swishing it's tail as it walked over to a palm, trying to devour it's greens.

She gently touched the horse on his rump, just above the tail and slid her fingers over his back. She rubbed her fingers against his whithers and up his mane.
"Hey pretty boy. Are you missing someone?" She asked, stroking his neck.

The horse looked at her, his ears perked. His ears flattened in uncertainly and he nudged her, trying her out.

Nel pushed back. "No sir. No tricks." She said sternly and then rubbed his forelock. "But you certainly are a handsome fellow."

The horse nickered and shook his body, the saddle moving on his back a little. It was worn, like someone was just in it.

Nel looked at the saddle and quickly unbuckled it, pulling it off and setting it under a tree. She rubbed the horse's forelock again.
"There, does that feel a little better?" She asked and ran a hand over his coat.

He shook it head, nickering happily. He looked at her, wondering if he should. An unnoticeable grin appeared on his face and a deep, rich voice called, " A horse thief, eh?"

"I most cetainly am not!" She bristled defensively. "If I wanted a horse I'd ask a wild one to carry me or fly myself."

Nel growled, different patterns rippling over her skin. Her hands curled into fists and shook with rage. An asp coiled around her ankle. Similar smooth scales rippled over Nel's skin before returning to the normal pale cream.
"Touch me," she growled, "and I'll castrate you."

Nel shivered, dispite the heat. "I don't have to do anything." She replied cooly. The herd stallion came charging across the oasis, his mares behind him. Other snakes came out of the brush and raptors settled around them. A snowy owl, unsual for the setting, perched on Nel's shoulder.

The voice stopped laughing when the horse freaked. He backed away, his ears pinned in fear.

The stallion snorted angrily and struck the ground with both front hooves. Nel was on his back in a flash and the herd was once again moving away. The snakes when back to their usual routine as though there had been no interruption and the same went for the raptors. The snowy owl, though, followed Nel.

Nel flopped down in the sand, looking up at the sky. Ardis, the snowy owl, landed on her chest and stared down at her with yellow eyes. She brought a hand up and ran her fingers through his feathers.
"Hello Ardis."
You got upset.
"I don't steal and if I did, it would be because I want to free an animal." Nel said and frowned. "I'm sorry I worried you Ardis."
What about the other animals?
"I've apologized already."
Very well. I think I'll stay close though.
"Thanks Ardis." He flew to some shadows and she rolled onto her stomach. She sighed, resting her chin on her hands.

The horse waited for a little bit before looking at his hooves. He stood and trotted over to her, " Ma'am...."

Nel laid her cheek against her knuckles and looked at the horse. "Yes?" The stallion looked up. Nel just waited.
